Vydubychi Monastery

A small, quiet 11th-century monastery on the Dnieper south of the city centre, founded around 1070 and one of the oldest religious complexes in Kyivan Rus. Unlike the Lavra, it never became a tourist destination, and its grouping of small whitewashed churches has the feel of a working country monastery — even though it is now well inside the city limits.

The Saint Michael's Church at its centre dates from the 1070s; the bell tower and refectory are 18th century baroque. It is a half-hour metro ride from the centre and worth the detour for the atmosphere alone.
