Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre

Viennese baroque opera house where Tchaikovsky conducted and Pavlova danced

One of the most beautiful opera houses in Eastern Europe, completed in 1887 to a design by Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer. The exterior is Viennese baroque; the interior blends Louis XVI style with elements of the Italian Renaissance and French rococo — gilded friezes, sculptural groups from Greek mythology, and red velvet seats and boxes that seat over 1,600. Tchaikovsky conducted here; Anna Pavlova danced on its stage. Even if you are not attending a performance, the foyer and auditorium are worth seeing on a guided tour.
