Odessa rewards slow exploration. The city centre is compact enough to cover on foot, and its grandest landmarks — the Potemkin Stairs, the Opera House, Prymorsky Boulevard — are concentrated within a few blocks of each other. Beyond the set pieces, the 19th-century streetscape of Italianate facades and hidden courtyards is worth wandering in its own right.
