Myrhorod, 90 km northwest of Poltava, is a small spa town best known for its mineral water (sold throughout Ukraine under the Myrhorodska brand) and its sanatorium tradition. It was made famous by Nikolai Gogol, who was born in the nearby village of Hoholeve and set his early comic stories in this part of Ukraine. The Gogol connection is the main cultural draw; a literary museum in town covers his life and work.
