When to Go

Poltava has a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. The best time to visit is May to September, when temperatures are comfortable and the parks are in full leaf. June can be hot (often above 25°C), but mornings are pleasant for walking. October brings cool temperatures and autumn colour in the parks. Winter is cold and grey, with temperatures regularly below freezing from December through February.

The city holds an annual commemoration of the 1709 battle in late June or early July near the anniversary date. Events are typically low-key (academic lectures, wreath-laying at the monuments) rather than large-scale, but it is the one time of year when the battlefield site draws organised tours.

Note: the security situation in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022 may affect travel plans and the operation of museums and cultural sites. Check current travel advisories before visiting.
