Derby has a surprisingly lively pub culture anchored around the Cathedral Quarter and Friar Gate. The city has a strong claim to being a real-ale stronghold — Marston's, Bass, and several smaller breweries have deep roots here, and independent pubs that keep a proper cellar are not hard to find. Friar Gate in particular has a good strip of independent bars alongside some handsome Georgian architecture.
