The city centre is compact and walkable — the cathedral, market, museum, and riverside are all within fifteen minutes on foot. Trent Barton and Arriva run frequent bus services to the suburbs and outlying villages. There is no tram or metro.
For the Derwent Valley Mills heritage trail, a combination of bus and walking works well: the Transpeak bus service runs along the A6 through Belper and Matlock towards Buxton, stopping at points along the heritage corridor. Hiring a bike and cycling the Derwent Valley is genuinely rewarding.
