Britannia Pier

Britannia Pier is the classic English seaside pier in its most exuberant form. It stretches 300 metres into the North Sea from the Golden Mile, and the walk along it on a breezy day — with the town behind you and the water on all sides — is genuinely bracing. At the far end there are amusements, a bar, and the kind of penny-slot machines that have been extracting coins from holiday-makers since the Victorian era.

The pier's theatre runs a summer season of variety shows, pantomime, and comedy acts — this is exactly the tradition the pier was built for, and it continues doing it competently. Tickets are inexpensive and the shows are cheerfully unpretentious. Worth checking the programme when you arrive.

A story
Britannia Pier has burned down twice — once in 1909 and again in 1914, just after reconstruction was completed. The current structure dates largely from 1954. The pier's summer theatre has hosted most of the big names in British variety entertainment since the Victorian era.
