An 11-acre common land on the north side of Hitchin centre, named for the archery butts that stood here in the Middle Ages when townspeople were obliged by royal decree to practise the longbow. After archery declined the land served as fairground, pasture and now a public park.
The Tilehouse Street side has a children's playground; the rest is open grass, used by dog-walkers, joggers and the local fairs and circuses that come through several times a year. A pleasant short walk from the centre.
