Thetford packs a surprising amount of history into a small area. The medieval ruins — the priory, the castle mound, the fragments of Holy Sepulchre — are all free to visit and rarely crowded. Grime's Graves, eight kilometres to the northwest, requires a small detour but is one of the most memorable prehistoric sites in England. The forest, wrapped around the town on most sides, provides the backdrop for everything.
