Moss Eccles Tarn

A small, reed-fringed tarn on Claife Heights above Near Sawrey, Moss Eccles is the one Beatrix Potter loved best. She and her husband William Heelis would row out here in their boat on summer evenings, and she planted the water lilies that still bloom on the surface. The tarn was given to the National Trust on her death.

It is reachable in about an hour from Near Sawrey on a well-marked path through bracken and woodland, or a longer four-hour loop from Hawkshead. The walk is peaceful, the views back over to Windermere fine, and you usually have it to yourself.
