A small artificial lake surrounded by larch and pine plantations on the high ground between Hawkshead and Coniston, Tarn Hows is one of the most photographed places in the Lake District. A two-mile path circles the water, easy enough for almost anyone, with constantly changing views back to the Coniston fells.
It is the obvious short walk for a family afternoon. The National Trust car park fills up early on summer weekends; come before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. There is a Herdwick sheep enclosure beside the car park.
