Electric Avenue

Brixton's historic market street, one of the first in Britain lit by electricity

Electric Avenue is the curved market street at the centre of Brixton, famous as one of the first shopping streets in Britain to be lit by electric light in the 1880s — and later as the title of Eddy Grant's 1982 song. Today it is a lively street market where stalls and shops sell Caribbean and African produce, fish, spices, fabric, and household goods, the everyday trade that has served Brixton's communities for generations.

It is loud, colourful, and unpretentious, and it runs straight into the covered arcades of Brixton Village and Market Row. Come to feel the working life of the neighbourhood, pick up tropical fruit and ingredients you will not find elsewhere, and soak up the soundtrack of competing market traders and music from the shops.
