Gawthorpe Hall sits at Padiham, near Burnley. It was home to the Kaye-Shuttleworths, a family connected to the great textile inventions, and is now owned by the National Trust.
The hall has some fine paintings, but its principal claim to fame -- and the reason justifying a visit from anywhere in the area -- is its collection of needlework and tapestry. These are of outstanding quality and will give pleasure to a much wider audience than the usual textile enthusiasts.
