A famously characterful Victorian pub on a Georgian terrace south of the Anglican Cathedral. The interior is a warren of small snug rooms, each with carved wood panelling, etched glass, oil paintings, and elaborately painted murals — much of it painted by a former landlord who refused to pay his decorators in cash and gave them free drinks for life instead.
The pub draws an unusually mixed crowd — students, regulars, theatregoers from the Everyman, the curious — and has a good range of cask beers. Open fires in winter. One of the most singular pubs in Liverpool.
