A short narrow street in the cathedral end of the city centre, given over almost entirely to Beatles tourism and pub crawls. The original Cavern Club was at number 10 (the rebuilt Cavern occupies most of the site), and a bronze statue of John Lennon leans nonchalantly against a wall opposite. The "Wall of Fame" lists every act ever to have played the Cavern.
By day the street is touristy but pleasantly so; by night it's loud and crowded with stag and hen parties. The annual International Beatleweek festival in August closes the street for live music. Step away from Mathew Street for a more grown-up evening — the Hope Street and Baltic Triangle areas are quieter.
