The Three Graces

Three monumental Edwardian buildings on the Pier Head waterfront

Address Pier Head, Liverpool, L3 1HU

The collective name for the three vast Edwardian buildings — the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building — that line the Pier Head waterfront. Together they form one of the most distinctive city skylines in Britain, and were a major reason Liverpool was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004 (a status the city controversially lost in 2021 over waterfront redevelopment).

The Cunard Building (1916), in a French Renaissance style, was the headquarters of the great Atlantic shipping line and still houses the British Music Experience museum. The Port of Liverpool Building (1907) is a grand domed Edwardian baroque office. The Royal Liver Building (1911) is the tallest and the symbol of the city. All three are best seen from the river, on a Mersey ferry crossing.
