Chiswick Mall is a handsome stretch of Georgian and early Victorian riverside houses facing directly onto the Thames, connected by a towpath that runs along the riverbank. The houses here are among the grandest on the upper Thames west of London, and the combination of period architecture, river views, and the occasional heron or kingfisher makes this one of the pleasantest walks in west London.
The towpath continues east toward Hammersmith and west toward Strand-on-the-Green and Kew, allowing you to extend the walk considerably in either direction. Several riverside pubs — including the Bell and Crown at Strand-on-the-Green — punctuate the route. The walk between Chiswick Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge is particularly good, following the river bend and passing Chiswick Eyot, a small uninhabited island in the middle of the Thames.
