Chiswick is a leafy west London neighbourhood with a village feel that belies its proximity to central London — Turnham Green tube station is about 20 minutes from the West End on the District line.
Chiswick High Road and its continuation into Turnham Green Terrace form a lively strip of independent shops, delis, and restaurants. The area has become one of London's better dining neighbourhoods — La Trompette is a destination restaurant by London standards. A five-minute walk south brings you to the Thames towpath and Chiswick Mall, a handsome stretch of riverside houses with a string of pubs — one of the pleasantest waterside walks in London.
Chiswick House, a Palladian villa built in the 1720s by Lord Burlington, sits in handsome grounds that are free to enter and worth a wander. Fuller's Griffin Brewery, the last traditional brewery in London, is also here — tours run regularly. Hogarth's House, the satirist's former country retreat, is free to enter and close by.
