Oxford has a good mix of high street shops and independent stores. The main shopping streets are Cornmarket Street and Queen Street, which are pedestrianised and home to the usual chain shops.

The Covered Market is the real highlight. Trading since 1774, it is packed with independent butchers, fishmongers, cheese shops, cafes and gift shops. You can pick up anything from a venison pie to a handmade hat.

Blackwell's Books on Broad Street is one of the most famous bookshops in the world. Founded in 1879, its underground Norrington Room is a vast cavern of shelves and one of the largest single rooms selling books in Europe.

Alice's Shop on St Aldate's, opposite Christ Church, is themed around Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and sells memorabilia and novelty items. Carroll reportedly based the "old sheep shop" in Through the Looking Glass on this building.

The Westgate Centre is a modern shopping mall at the western end of Queen Street with restaurants, a rooftop terrace and high street brands.

For something more unusual, browse the independent shops along Little Clarendon Street and Walton Street in Jericho, Oxford's trendiest neighbourhood.
