Bourton-on-the-Water

Village where the Windrush flows through the centre under low footbridges — extremely popular and very crowded in summer.

Bourton-on-the-Water is the Cotswolds at its most visited: a village where the River Windrush flows through the centre of the high street in a shallow, reed-lined channel crossed by a series of low stone footbridges. The combination of the flowing water, the mellow stone buildings, and the village green makes it genuinely attractive. It also makes it one of the most crowded places in the Cotswolds, with summer weekends bringing numbers that strain the narrow streets.

The village has a cluster of small attractions — a model village, a motor museum, a perfumery — which add to the tourist pull without greatly enhancing the experience. What works is simply walking along the river and through the streets, ideally out of season or early in the morning.

Birdland, a wildlife park set in five acres of gardens with penguins as the centrepiece, is popular with families. The Cotswold Motoring Museum in a converted mill contains a modest but genuine collection of vintage vehicles including the original Brum car from the children's television series.

The village makes a practical base for the central Cotswolds — Bourton is roughly equidistant from Cheltenham, Cirencester, and Stow-on-the-Wold, and the surrounding country roads lead quickly to quieter villages. Bourton itself, however, is best treated as a stop rather than a destination.
