Bradley House

Bradley is a small medieval manor house just outside Newton Abbot, set in twenty hectares of wood and meadow along the River Lemon. It is open to the public on summer afternoons and is one of the few buildings of its kind in Devon that survives without major Victorian rebuilding — the great hall, the chapel, the screens passage are all genuinely 15th century.

The walk to Bradley from the town centre takes about thirty minutes through the woodland of Bradley Woods, and the grounds are open year-round even when the house is not. It is a quiet, slightly forgotten corner of the National Trust portfolio, and you can have the place largely to yourself outside summer holidays. Check the Trust website for opening days before visiting.

A story
Bradley is a remarkably intact 15th-century manor house — the great hall, the chapel, and the screens passage all survive much as they were built around 1420. It was given to the National Trust in 1938 on the condition that the donor and his descendants could continue to live in it, which they still do.
