Newton Abbot Market

Newton Abbot has been a market town since the 13th century — the market charter dates to 1220 — and the weekly outdoor market still draws traders and farmers from across south Devon. The general market runs on Wednesdays, the farmers' market on the second Saturday of each month, and there is a daily indoor market in the covered building on Market Walk.

It is a working market rather than a tourist one, which is the point: fish from Brixham, cheese from Sharpham, cider apples in autumn, cut flowers, plants, and clothes. The indoor section has a row of cafes and a Devonshire pasty stall that is good enough to justify the trip on its own.
