Passmore Edwards Centre

The Passmore Edwards Centre houses the Newton Abbot Museum, a small local-history collection that does a creditable job on the things that matter to the town — the railway works that once dominated the local economy, the medieval market charter, and the part Newton Abbot played in the Glorious Revolution. There is also a corner devoted to South Devon Pottery, a once-famous local industry.

Entry is free. The building itself is a late-Victorian library founded by the Cornish philanthropist John Passmore Edwards, who endowed dozens of similar libraries and hospitals across the South West. Opening hours are limited, mostly weekday mornings — check before going.
