The Great Globe sits in a sunken garden in Durlston Country Park, ten feet across and forty tonnes of Portland stone, carved in 1887 as the centrepiece of George Burt's improving vision for the headland. The continents and oceans are incised into the surface — a faithful enough representation of the Victorian world — and the surrounding stone tablets carry the verses and quotations Burt thought visitors should be improved by.
It is a small detour off the South West Coast Path between Durlston Castle and Anvil Point Lighthouse, and almost everyone walking the headland stops to read the inscriptions. Combine with Durlston Castle and the Tilly Whim Caves for a full park visit.
