Babbacombe Cliff Railway

Edwardian funicular dropping 240 feet down the cliff to Oddicombe Beach

A short Edwardian funicular that drops roughly 240 feet down the red cliff from the top of Babbacombe Downs to Oddicombe Beach. The ride takes about a minute and saves you a long scramble down the path. The views over Lyme Bay from the upper station are some of the best in town — you can see all the way to Portland Bill on a clear day.

Cliff Road, Babbacombe. Runs from spring to autumn; check seasonal hours.

A story
The line opened in 1926, paused for the Second World War, and has been running tourists down to the beach in much the same fashion ever since. The two cars are linked by cable and balance each other — when one goes up, the other comes down.
