Stoke Minster (the church of St Peter ad Vincula) sits at the centre of Stoke town proper and is the city's principal parish church. The current Gothic Revival building dates from 1830, replacing a medieval predecessor that had become too small for the rapidly industrialising town. Inside, the surprise is the depth of pottery connections: Josiah Wedgwood and Josiah Spode are both buried here, as is the brewer William Bass.
The churchyard contains a sundial designed by Josiah Wedgwood and the original 14th-century Saxon cross shaft from the old church. The interior is light, broad, and unfussy. If you are tracking the history of the Potteries it makes a fitting first or last stop.
