Wedgwood Monument

A statue of Josiah Wedgwood that was once a vast obelisk

The current Wedgwood Monument is a bronze figure of Josiah Wedgwood holding a copy of the Portland Vase, standing on a pedestal outside Burslem (Etruria Vale) station. It replaced an extraordinary 130-foot stone obelisk of the same subject erected in 1863 — at the time, the largest such memorial in Staffordshire. The obelisk was found to be unsafe and pulled down in 1957, leaving Burslem to commission a much more modest replacement.

The statue is not a destination in itself but is worth a moment if you are exploring the historic potteries of Burslem — the "mother town" of the Stoke ceramics industry, where the major firms got their start. From here it is a short walk to Middleport Pottery and the Doulton Galleries at the World of Wedgwood's sister site.

A story
The original 1863 obelisk to Wedgwood stood 130 feet tall and dominated the Burslem skyline. It was demolished as unsafe in 1957. The replacement, a bronze statue of Josiah Wedgwood at a quarter the height of the original, holds a Portland Vase replica and stands almost apologetically outside Burslem station.
