One of England's most complete medieval castles, Warwick Castle was begun by William the Conqueror in 1068 and expanded continuously through the 14th and 15th centuries. The great towers — Caesar's Tower and Guy's Tower — give sweeping views over the Avon and the surrounding countryside. The interior covers everything from the original medieval great hall to Victorian state rooms. It is now run commercially with costumed presentations and seasonal events, which suits families well but can feel thin for those who prefer their history straight. Book in advance to avoid queues in summer.

A story
The castle was bought by the Tussauds Group in 1978 from the Greville family who had owned it for more than 350 years. Madame Tussauds populated the state rooms with wax models of weekend party guests of the Edwardian Earl — a deeply un-English bit of theatre that has somehow become part of the place's identity. The wax figures are still there.
