Beverley eats well above the standard of most market towns its size. There are two or three serious independent restaurants, a strong pub-food scene anchored by the historic inns around the market squares, and a small but improving cafe scene on the side streets.
Whites Restaurant, on North Bar Without, is the town's destination address — small, modern British tasting menus, good wine list, regularly written up in the national press. Book ahead. The Westwood, in the old Sessions House at New Walk, does a more relaxed but still ambitious modern menu in handsome surroundings.
For traditional pub food, the Sun Inn on Flemingate, the Cornerhouse on Norwood, and the King's Head on Saturday Market are all reliable, with locally brewed beers and changing daily specials. For lunch and brunch, look along Toll Gavel and Ladygate for a row of independent cafes.
