Saturday Market

Twelfth-century market square anchored by the 1714 Market Cross

The Saturday Market is one of the most attractive squares in the north of England — a wide, paved space ringed by Georgian and Victorian buildings and anchored by an elegant Market Cross of 1714, with a tall lead roof carried on Doric columns. A market has been held here since the twelfth century and still runs every Saturday, with stalls of meat, vegetables, cheese, flowers, and clothes filling the square.

The streets that lead off the square — Toll Gavel, Butcher Row, Ladygate — are full of independent shops, pubs, and cafes. It is one of the parts of town where you can most easily picture Beverley as the prosperous medieval and Georgian trading centre it once was.
