Mumtaz

Mumtaz is the standard-setting Pakistani restaurant in a city that takes its curry houses extremely seriously. The original on Great Horton Road opened as a small takeaway in 1979 and now occupies a sprawling, plush dining room over multiple floors, sending out karahi lamb, chicken handi and tandoori dishes that defined Bradford-style Pakistani cooking for a generation.

This is not the cheapest curry in the city — main courses run from £14 — but it is consistently the best. Mumtaz produces a range of branded ready meals and chutneys that ship across Britain, but the kitchen experience at the flagship is the reason to go. Open daily; no alcohol licence (BYO is not permitted).
