Ballynoe Stone Circle

Large prehistoric stone circle south of Downpatrick, used from the Neolithic into the Bronze Age.

Ballynoe Stone Circle is one of the strongest prehistoric sites near Downpatrick. The circle is about 30 yards across, with dozens of stones still standing, and archaeology suggests use from the Neolithic into the Bronze Age.

It is not packaged or over-explained, which is part of its appeal. The site makes a good counterweight to the Patrick material in town: a reminder that this landscape was already ritual ground long before Christianity arrived.
