Highland Wildlife Park

Highland Wildlife Park near Kincraig is run by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and focuses on species associated with the Scottish Highlands — past, present, and future. The park has the largest collection of Scottish wildlife anywhere in the world: red deer, red squirrels, capercaillie, Scottish wildcats, ospreys. It also holds species that once lived in Scotland but were hunted or driven out: wolves, lynx, brown bears, European bison.

For families, it offers a good alternative on a rainy day — there's a drive-through section for seeing larger animals and a walk-through area for smaller ones. For naturalists, the collection of genuinely rare Scottish species in near-natural enclosures has real interest. The wildcat breeding programme here is particularly significant: fewer than 300 truly wild Scottish wildcats are thought to survive, making the captive population at Kincraig an insurance policy for the species.

A story
The park holds the only polar bears in Scotland — a female and occasional cubs from the breeding programme. Polar bears in the Cairngorms might seem incongruous, but Scotland's latitude is not far from the bears' natural range, and winter temperatures on the plateau can approach Arctic conditions. They seem to have settled in reasonably well.
