Ruthven Barracks is a stark Hanoverian ruin on a mound above the Spey valley near Kingussie. Built after the 1715 Jacobite rising, it was attacked during the 1745 rising, surrendered the following year, and was then wrecked as the Jacobites retreated after Culloden.
The site is small, free, and atmospheric, with strong views over the surrounding countryside. It is one of the better quick historical stops in the western Cairngorms, especially if you are following the Jacobite story through the Highlands.
