Callander sits at the edge of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park and is well-placed for day trips across a wide swath of central Scotland. Stirling, with its castle and Wallace Monument, is under 30 minutes by car. Loch Katrine — best reached by taking the SS Sir Walter Scott steamer from Trossachs Pier — is about 20 minutes drive. The Lake of Menteith, Scotland's only natural lake (as opposed to loch), lies about 15 km to the south and is worth visiting for the ruined Inchmahome Priory on its island, accessible by ferry. Aberfoyle, the other Trossachs gateway town, is 20 km via the Duke's Pass road through the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park.
