West Highland Museum

The West Highland Museum is the principal cultural attraction in Fort William itself, occupying a fine 18th-century building on the main square. The collection covers the natural history, archaeology, and social history of Lochaber, from Bronze Age axe-heads to Jacobite memorabilia and a comprehensive display on the West Highland Railway.

The Jacobite material is the highlight — relics from the 1745 rebellion, including a kilt, a sgian-dubh, and the famous anamorphic portrait of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Entry is free and a stop here is the obvious thing to do on a rainy afternoon.

A story
The museum's most-talked-about exhibit is the 'secret portrait' of Bonnie Prince Charlie — a smear of paint on a wooden panel that resolves into a recognisable portrait only when reflected in a polished cylinder placed at its centre. The trick allowed Jacobites to keep an image of their exiled prince without risking the gallows.
