Gight Castle

Ruined Gordon tower house, birthplace of Lord Byron's mother

The roofless ruins of a 16th-century Gordon tower house on a gorge above the River Ythan, about 5 km from Fyvie. Gight was the ancestral seat of the Gordon family and the birthplace of Catherine Gordon, mother of the poet Lord Byron. Her husband — known locally as "Mad Jack" Byron — spent the family fortune, forcing the sale of the castle; it was never reoccupied. The site is not signposted and requires an Ordnance Survey map to locate.
