The River Ythan runs through the estate grounds below Fyvie Castle, entering a gorge section that provides some of the most dramatic scenery in this part of Aberdeenshire. The river is well known for sea trout and salmon fishing — permits can be arranged through local angling associations. Day permits are available and the Ythan is considered one of the better managed smaller salmon rivers in Scotland.
For non-fishers, the riverside paths below the castle offer a pleasant walk through mixed woodland, particularly good in early summer when the wildflowers are out. The gorge above Gight is rougher and requires an OS map — the path is not maintained. Downstream, the Ythan broadens into an estuary near the coast at Newburgh, where it is one of the best places in Scotland to see grey seals.
