Craig Phadrig is a low, wooded hill on the western side of Inverness with the remains of an ancient fort at the top. It is close enough to town for a short outing, but the trees and the climb make it feel properly removed from traffic and shops.
The archaeology is not showy: banks, traces, and interpretation rather than reconstructed walls. The reason to go is the combination of Iron Age history, easy woodland walking, and views toward the Beauly Firth when the weather opens.
