The city centre is small and walkable. Most of the in-town sights — the castle, the museum, the cathedral, the Victorian Market — are within fifteen minutes on foot of each other.
Car rental
For day trips to Culloden, Cawdor, Loch Ness, and the wider Highlands, a car is almost essential. All the major rental companies have offices at Inverness Airport and in the city centre. Pick up the car on arrival if you plan to explore beyond the city.
Buses
Local Stagecoach buses cover the city and nearby towns. Route 5 runs to Culloden, and there are services to Nairn and Beauly. The Jacobite coach tour from the city centre to Loch Ness and back is a popular option for those without a car.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available. The main rank is on Academy Street near the bus station.
Cycling
The city is reasonably cycle-friendly for short trips, and the riverside path along the Ness is a pleasant route. For longer rides, the Great Glen Way is a long-distance cycling and walking route from Inverness to Fort William.
