The Highland summer — June to August — offers the best weather and the longest days, but it also brings midges. These tiny biting insects are the bane of Highland tourism from May to September, particularly in still, humid conditions near water and in woodland. A good midge repellent is essential if you plan to spend time outdoors.
Summer (June–August)
Long days, often with eighteen or more hours of usable daylight. Temperatures can reach the high teens and occasionally low twenties Celsius, though rain is possible at any time. The peak tourist season: Loch Ness is busiest, accommodation prices are highest, but everything is open.
Autumn (September–October)
Often the best time to visit. The midges have largely gone after the first frost, the autumn colours in the Highland glens are exceptional, and crowds have thinned. Temperatures are cooler but manageable.
Winter (November–March)
Cold, often grey, and sometimes spectacular. Snow on the surrounding mountains creates dramatic scenery. The ski centre at Cairngorm is accessible by bus from Inverness. Very short days in December, with sunset before 4pm.
Spring (April–May)
Changeable but often beautiful, with wildflowers and green valleys. Midges begin emerging in May. A good time to visit if you can tolerate some uncertainty about the weather.
