Inverness is well connected by train and air, but it is a long way from most of England. From London by direct train takes around eight hours; most rail travellers change at Edinburgh or Perth.
By train
Inverness station has direct services to Edinburgh (3.5 hours), Aberdeen (2 hours), and Glasgow (3.5 hours). The line from Inverness westward to Kyle of Lochalsh, crossing the Highland mountains to the coast, is one of Britain's most scenic rail journeys. The line north to Thurso and Wick is another remarkable route through empty countryside.
By air
Inverness Airport (INV) is 10 kilometres east of the city and has flights to London Gatwick, London Luton, Bristol, Belfast, Amsterdam, and several other European destinations. Taxis and buses connect the airport to the city centre.
By bus
CityLink operates coaches from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen. Journey times are longer than the train but fares are often significantly cheaper.
By car
The A9 from Edinburgh and Perth is the main road north. The drive from Edinburgh takes around three hours in normal conditions. The road crosses Drumochter Pass, which can be snowy and occasionally closed in winter.
