Culloden Moor lies just 5 kilometres east of Inverness city centre, making it one of the most accessible major battlefields in Britain. The National Trust for Scotland operates an excellent visitor centre here with detailed accounts of the battle, the Highland culture that was suppressed in its wake, and the fate of the survivors.
The moor itself is partially reconstructed to show how it looked in 1746 — trees have been cleared and a section of the old road restored. Clan headstones mark the mass graves where the Jacobite dead were buried. The spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie watched his army destroyed is marked, as is the Cumberland Stone — the rock from which the Duke of Cumberland allegedly watched the slaughter. Allow at least two hours to do the site justice.
