Dochgarroch Locks

Caledonian Canal locks and towpath walk just outside Inverness

Dochgarroch Locks make a good low-effort way to see the Caledonian Canal in action without leaving the Inverness area for a full Loch Ness trip. Boats pass through the lock gates, the towpath is level, and the landscape quickly shifts from city edge to water, fields, and wooded banks.

The classic outing is the easy walk along the canal from Inverness to Dochgarroch and back by the opposite bank or a linked route. It is not dramatic Highland scenery, but it is practical, pleasant, and gives you a close look at the engineering that connected Scotland's east and west coasts.
