Victorian Market

Atmospheric Victorian indoor market with independent shops under a glazed roof

The Victorian Market runs through the heart of Inverness city centre, connecting Academy Street to Church Street via an arcade of independent shops beneath an ornate glazed roof. It's an atmospheric space, particularly on a rainy Highland day when the light filters down through the ironwork.

The market has around 40 traders selling everything from fresh produce and butcher's meat to knitwear, gifts, and antiques. It's a genuine local shopping destination rather than a tourist market, which gives it a pleasantly authentic feel. The café inside is a good spot for coffee and a break from sightseeing.

A story
The Victorian Market opened in 1870 and was the first covered market in the north of Scotland. Its glazed roof and cast-iron structure have been carefully preserved, and it remains a working market with independent traders — one of the few Victorian market halls in Scotland still operating in its original function.
