The Bone Caves sit in a limestone valley near Inchnadamph, north of Lochinver, and make one of Assynt's most rewarding half-day walks. Excavations here found remains of animals such as reindeer, lynx, and polar bear, a reminder that this landscape has changed more radically than its bare hills suggest.
The walk is popular but still feels wild, with caves opening in the cliff and views back through the valley. Wear boots, expect changeable weather, and resist scrambling beyond your comfort level; the setting is more memorable than any risky photograph.
