Hermit's Castle

A tiny concrete folly above Achmelvich Beach, often called Europe's smallest castle

Hermit's Castle is a strange little concrete folly tucked into the rocks above Achmelvich Beach. Built in the 1950s and abandoned almost immediately, it is often described as one of Europe's smallest castles, though it feels more like a sculptural shelter than a building.

The appeal is the combination: a surreal object, a rough headland path, and one of Sutherland's loveliest beaches below. It is not worth a long journey by itself, but it is a memorable extra if you are already in Lochinver or walking around Achmelvich.
