A short ferry crossing from Tingwall lands you on Rousay, a small hilly island with one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric monuments in northern Europe. A single road circles the island, and the cairns of Taversoe Tuick, Blackhammer, the Knowe of Yarso, Midhowe Chambered Cairn, and Midhowe Broch line its western half within a few kilometres of each other.
The island is small enough to cycle in a day. Most visitors come for the morning, do the western archaeology trail, and catch the afternoon ferry back. Limited accommodation; bring food.
