Westray

Northern island with seabird cliffs and the Westray Wife figurine site

One of the larger northern isles, Westray is a green and intensively farmed island with excellent cliffs on its western side. Noup Head, at the northwestern tip, is the most accessible major seabird cliff in Orkney — guillemots, razorbills, gannets, and puffins (in season) in enormous numbers. The Links of Noltland is the site where the Westray Wife was discovered.

Pierowall is the main village. The island is reached by ferry from Kirkwall, an 80-minute crossing. Hire a car at the pier or bring a bike. Worth at least an overnight; two days are better.

A story
The Westray Wife — also called the Orkney Venus — is a five-centimetre sandstone figurine carved around 3000 BCE, found at the Links of Noltland in 2009. It is the earliest representation of a human face known from the British Isles.
